About FATE
Fighting Addiction Through Education (FATE) is a non profit organization with a mission to educate and motivate Oklahomans about the use of alcohol and other drugs and to change the culture of our state on the subject of alcohol and other drugs.
We believe the #1 problem facing the state of Oklahoma is substance abuse and addiction. Oklahoma spends $1.4 billion (that’s BILLION with a “B”) each year in direct costs caused by substance abuse. The majority of those costs are related to safety and security issues (lie prisons, jails, prosecution), and the contribution of substance abuse to domestic violence/sexual assault and resulting child abuse and neglect. The overall negative economic impact on the state from substance abuse is estimated to be between $4 and $5 billion dollars a year. Think what it would mean to our state’s economy if we could deal with this problem.
But dollars are impersonal things. The real and tragic cost is measured in human lives ruined or ended by alcohol and other drugs. If we are to improve the health, safety, economy and personal lives of our state and its people, we must do something more and different about substance abuse and addiction .
Few Oklahomans recognize the significance and scope of the problem in the state and few are aware of ways to address the problem. FATE seeks to educate Oklahomans about substance abuse and addiction in our state and to motivate them to action in solving both the individual and the statewide problem.
